Red Carpet Setup 101: What Goes Into a VIP Entrance
A red carpet entrance looks simple in photos — carpet, a couple of posts, a rope — but a setup that actually holds up for a night of arrivals, photographers and wind has more moving parts than most organisers expect.
The three components that make it work
- Carpet — deep-pile, cut to the exact width and length of your entrance, taped or weighted at every seam so it doesn't lift or bunch under foot traffic.
- Stanchions — weighted, freestanding gold posts that don't require drilling into venue flooring, spaced to guide flow without crowding the photo line.
- Rope — velvet rope hung at a height that reads clearly in photographs while still being easy to step over for staff and crew.
Getting the width right
Standard entrances run 1.2–2.4 metres wide; a full step-and-repeat photo zone with room for multiple arrivals side-by-side needs closer to 3–4 metres. Too narrow and arrivals bottleneck; too wide and the carpet looks sparse in wide shots. We size to your guest list and the venue frontage, not a default width.
The best red carpet setups are the ones nobody has to think about — guests walk a clean line, photographers get an unobstructed shot, and the carpet is gone the moment the last car pulls away.
Indoor vs outdoor entrances
Outdoor arrivals need a weather-rated backing and properly weighted stanchion bases — Dubai's evening wind off the coast is enough to shift a light setup mid-event. Indoor lobbies are more forgiving but still benefit from taped seams if the carpet crosses a doorway threshold or expansion joint in the flooring.
Timing
A standard VIP entrance is staged in 60–90 minutes once the crew is on-site, and struck in under half that once the last guest is through. For events with a hard arrival time — premieres, award nights, product launches — we schedule crew arrival to have the carpet down and photographers briefed well before the first car arrives.
What to tell us when you book
- Venue frontage width and whether the entrance is indoor or outdoor.
- Expected number of simultaneous arrivals for the photo line.
- Guest arrival time, so crew and load-in are scheduled correctly.
- Any branding or step-and-repeat backdrop happening alongside the carpet.
